Community Musings

This is a collection of some of my favorite moments, offbeat, endearing or mundane, that I have encountered while working in community news for the past few years.

  • From left, Sisters Jeanne Marie Akalski, Mary Valenta Akalski and Mary Ann Papiez of St. Joseph's Basilica place their raffle tickets on the prizes that interest them at the St. Andrew Bobola Church Festival on Saturday, August 29, 2015.
  • Larissa Fossella, 4, decided to take a little nap while waiting for all 278 Oliver Ames High School graduates to receive their diplomas. Larissa attended in support of her graduating sister Whitley Fossella.
  • From left, Brendan Houle as Aries, Connor Brewster as Poseidon and Noah Hayden as Zeus, wait {quote}on deck{quote} before performing their movie trailer in the {quote}Coming Attractions{quote} challenge. The third-graders from Centerville Elementary School created a skit where they travel to ancient Greece and Egypt via time machine. Destination Imagination, a creative problem solving competition, involved 61 Cape and South Coast based teams and was held at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. The winners will move on to the state level of the competition.
  • Sisters Lily, left, and Annabelle Giardino, 5 and 3, work together to fill their watering can for the bed of flowers they just planted with their father and grandmother on Mother's Day.
  • Evelyn Gray gives Audrey Nortey, 8, some corn rows with her son, Daniel Frempong, 1, at her side as Harriet Nortey and her daughter, Joelle, 8 months, watch at Evelyn's Braiding Shop on Thursday, April 23, 2015.

  • Frank Kelleher, 86,who has lived in Dennis since 1955, saddles up for his first lawn trimming of the season. Kelleher, a World War II Navy veteran, injured his legs in the South Pacific so he rigged a seat for his brush cutter. He is about to ride past a yard decoration that was given to his friend that passed away and now gets him a lot of attention from passers-by. He said that vacationers often stop by to ask if they can take a picture in front of the roadside attraction, but he thinks of it as a memorial to his loved one.
  • Worcester Earn a Bike volunteer Matt Warndorf, left, shows Dr. Joel Gore how to fix a flat during the 10th annual Earth Day celebration at UMASS Medical School on Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Gore said he wanted to learn because his wife always fixes his flats.
