CONCORDIA, Kan. -- 06/21/11 -- Nickolas practices walking with Keno around the Kansas National Guard armory gymnasium with about 20 other new handlers and their dogs. Other clients receiving dogs ranged in their ages and disabilities. CARES clients, to date, have ranged in age from 5 to 92. One man receiving an Irish Setter was struck by lightning and as a result suffers from brain damage and sight loss. His dog will assist him with his mobility issues. There were two children with juvenile diabetes receiving medic alert dogs. These animals will learn the scent their owner’s body chemistry and will notify them when their blood sugar is dangerously high or low.
